Job Specifics

• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to manage care of the critically ill adult patient.
• Assesses condition of the patient based on physical examination, results of laboratory and radiologic tests and other relevant data and develops a patient care plan. Monitors data and alters plan of care accordingly.
• Provides acute care and extended management of adult patients in an inpatient critical care setting, including ordering and evaluating appropriate diagnostic tests, collaborating with health care team members, and treating complications.
• Determines and initiates a variety of advanced critical care therapeutic procedures on adult patients including thoracentesis, placement of thoracic chest tubes, ion of arterial lines and central venous catheters,
• suturing of incisions as indicated, and intubation with airway management.
• Initiates, directs, and supervises resuscitation measures on the critical care patient during emergency situations until a physician arrives.
• Communicates with other patient care providers including residents, medical students, RNs, RRTs, etc to exchange information on condition of the patient, discuss progress (or lack of progress) and serves as resource to the same regarding care of the critical care patient.
• Communicates with patients and their families results of tests performed, progression towards goals, and educates regarding signs and symptoms of disease management. Continually re-evaluates plan of care with patient/family based on success of interventions and degree of patient satisfaction.
• Educates care givers and significant others/family regarding care of the patient and provides emotional support and guidance to the same.
• Completes all necessary documentation. Maintains full and current medical records of patients.
• Communicates with referring physicians to inform them of results of initial evaluation as well as continued follow-up on patient’s progression with plan of care.
• May develop and present educational programs on the care of the critical care patient to other nursing and healthcare providers within OSF HealthCare.
